  • "Raw & Baked" is a fresh radio artwork -electroacoustic composition- with a keen focus on the disembodied and acousmatic voice typical of the radio context, central element of the composer's aesthetics, here used primarily as sound object. The narrative scope of the electroacoustic composition is blurred, as it is inspired by the actions that take place throughout a day, but unfolding in reverse order and in a non linear direction. The sounds material include field recordings collected in The Netherlands, in Delft, in the springtime 2024, sometimes raw and sometimes electronically processed, with found samples and electronic sounds, resulting in a complex soundscape composition. The piece serves as a reflection on modern society, encouraging listeners contemplating and listening the world from a different perspective.

Sharp cuts and softly processed sounds create a dynamic texture, with raw field recordings making a deliberate artistic statement.
The voice of the late Italian actress Monica Vitti is processed as a tribute to her legacy.

The piece will also be premiered on Czech Radio as part of the artistic radio project ARS ACUSTICA on Wednesday, May 29, 2024.

  • Toward a definition of radio poetics: the soundscape on radio and the disembodied voice
  • Genre: Performative Lecture
  • Duration: 60 min
  • 'Toward a definition of radio poetics: the soundscape on radio and the disembodied voice' is a performative lecture by Margherita Brillada.
In her practice-oriented artistic research, titled "Re-thinking Radio Art: Community Radio and WebRadio” she investigates theoretical issues about community radio, collective listening, the socio-political agency of radio as a medium, new media technological development, and artistic implications/implementations.

This performative lecture was presented for the first time during Radio Concrète, a 12-hour radio marathon organized by Het Concrete in Tilburg (NL) in November 2023. Margherita is presenting a revisited and adapted version to be aired during the On Air - On Site 2024 broadcast.

Special thanks to Anneroos Goosen for the invitation and to the entire Het Concreet team.

Featuring:

Margherita Brillada

Margherita Brillada is a sound artist, artistic researcher and radio maker-curator based in The Hague. She is currently a research associate at the Institute of Sonology and a PhD candidate at the ACPA University of Leiden (NL), with a practice-oriented research project entitled Re-thinking Radio Art: Community Radio and WebRadio”. On Air – On Site is the first outcome of this practice-oriented research project, resulting in an experimental web radio based in Den Haag, collaborating with West Den Haag and the Institute of Sonology.

By re-thinking radio as a social-public space for artistic involvement and as an exhibition space for experimental sound art, the project attempts to articulate a specific “radio poetics” according to the sonic dimension intrinsic to the medium. Her practice encompasses soundscape compositions, woven with a rich tapestry of elements, including voices, found samples, and both raw and processed field recordings.

Producing radio artworks in search of new synergies between pure abstraction and storytelling, she pays particular attention to the urban soundscape and the anthropogenic presence in public spaces, emphasising the role of the disembodied and acousmatic voice in the radiopohonic context. To collect the sound materials for her compositions, in her practice, she include as an exploration in situ of site-specific spaces with different field recording techniques.
