  • La città eterna
  • Genre: Soundscape Composition
  • Duration: 15 min
  • "The Eternal City," existing between physical and temporal space, is a translation of a mind map depicting the city of Sofia and its current soundscape. This piece offers a transcription of a physical walk transformed into sound, capturing the essence of places in the present moment, based on my inner perception of the city. This process facilitated the amplification of certain characteristics that would otherwise remain unnoticed.
Growing up in Sofia, I became intimately familiar with it, knowing its streets and landmarks like the palm of my hand. However, since leaving the city nine years ago, I have been forced to deconstruct my memories of places, routes, textures, trees, and sounds. Stepping back into the city now, a wave of nostalgia washes over me. Although I no longer have a physical home there, it still holds a place in my heart.
This piece draws inspiration from Bulgarian poet Elena Deneva and is named after her poem "La Città Eterna." Her words convey the weight of eternal cities in one's memory and evoke the idea of temporal and physical displacement, which served as the foundation for this map.

Viktoria Nikolova

Viktoria Nikolova is a singer, performer, sound artist and curator from Sofia, Bulgaria, based in the Netherlands. Her work deals with topics of mediation within artistic processes, and theory where she seeks liminality between the disciplines and the physical/audible space. She integrates her findings with sound and vocal improvisation practices, currently developing a sensorial instrument engaging with ecological topics of displacement and new methods of mapping. Viktoria collaborates regularly with various composers and ensembles in the Netherlands and abroad, working in multidisciplinary environments. She is currently pursuing a degree in Arts, Media and Society at Leiden University where she is curator at Kunstgang. She is also following a One-Year Course at the Institute of Sonology. Viktoria obtained a Master degree in classical singing at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague in 2017. During her studies she conducted an artistic research on Bulgarian folklore singing which led to the foundation of her vocal trio Bitter Blossoms.
