  • “Sustainˮ is a sound art project and research conducted by independent artists, Sakha-born Alena (Oyuun Tuule) and Karelia-born Andrey (Circular Void). It's an electroacoustic endeavor that reinterprets folk music through an experimental lens.
This piece is performed by Oyuun Tuule using a traditional instrument called khomus (mouth harp). The khomus, a small metal instrument, is held between the teeth transforming the performerʼs body into a resonating chamber. Coupled with vocal additions, the artist achieves flanging and phasing effects in their analog form. The process of sound creation, intimate and spiritual, is captured using breathing techniques, sounding like the ethereal hum of air supply in bagpipes or organ pipes.
The performance was recorded by sound artist Andrey at a hidden cave carved out of the stone in the highlands of the Javakheti. Andrey helped expand the layers of space by recirculating the recording through a modular synth, adding resonances and harmonics to khomusʼs distinct sound throughout the piece to produce sustained pitch, and create chamber sound as well as a broadcast-like sensation.

Oyuun Tuule & Circular Void

Oyuun Tuule is Khomus performer, bass guitarist, and visual artist. Originally from the Sakha Republic with Sakha-Evenk indigenous ancestry, she has been living in exile since 2017 and is currently based in Tbilisi, Georgia. Through music and art, she explores themes of identity, cultural heritage, non-belongingness, as well as finding pathways for connection with her homeland. Engaged in ongoing research focused on embracing a decolonial perspective and techniques intended to break the shackles of colonial and imperial thinking about what music is, who makes it, who listens to it, and how it functions in human societies.

Circular Void is the project of Karelian sound artist and musician Andrey. Having a diverse background in sound design, music production, and field recording, he delves into a blend of sound art and experimental music. Andrey explores the sonic expression of the wide range of acoustic and electronic instruments, with focus on Finno-Karelian stringed bowed lyre “bass talharpa” (or jouhikko) through amplifiers combined with analog synthesis. His immersive compositions push the boundaries of artistic expression in avant-folk performances resulting in drone metal textures and dark ambient soundscapes. In early 2022, he founded Highland Sound studio for producing experimental music and sound art, later relocated to Tbilisi, Georgia. He has established a notable presence within the artistic community, participating in charitable releases, collaborative projects and curating the Highland Sound platform, an initiative dedicated to supporting emerging talented artists in exile.
