Semay Wu
Semay Wu – music maker mash – is a Scotland-based composer, media/sound artist, improviser and cellist. Influenced by free improvisation and electroacoustic frameworks, Semay brings a unique interdisciplinary approach to her work.
As well as being as a cellist, Semay produces and composes in different formats: graphic scores, audio/video-pieces, score-based work, performance interactive-installations, exhibition-theatre-dance pieces, and online community projects, such as Sounds Like Scran. Solo performances concentrate on live improvised electronics that sample cello, voice, tapes and everyday objects, while current collaborations are with Skye Reynolds (dance), Seth Bennett (double bass), Juana Adcock (poet), and larger groups: Ubu Warp Cheer, New String Collective and GIO.
Since 2022, Semay has regularly released solo material: Raspberry Hotel (Akashic Records, 2022), Sharmanka & Unsteady Stones (scatterArchive, 2023 & 2024), and Unsteady Stones/The Spinal Cactus #001 (Spinal Cactus, 2024).
