  • A collaboration spanning multiple continents, time zones, and years, “Earthworks”, by Aotearoa New Zealand-born composers Garling Wu and Jessie Leov, is an album of organic textures, delicate granular gestures, and surreal sonic spaces.

Composed remotely, the album responds to their changing environments as nomadic artists; from the metropolis of London, to rural landscapes of Japan, to ancient glaciers in Aotearoa New Zealand. During their travels, they gathered field recordings and samples, improvisations, voice memos, photographs, and words – sending these ‘musical letters’ to each other across vast distances.

Through contemplation of rapidly changing climates, Leov and Wu present their view of a fragile yet beautiful world.

    Supported by Creative New Zealand.
Featuring:

Garling Wu & Jessie Leov

Garling Wu is an artist and composer whose practice is born from a love of music and technology. In recent years, her curiosity has grown to encompass touch, gesture, light, scent and space within her work. Driven by a desire to fabricate spaces that evoke the rich inner imagination of her listeners, she plays with the human voice, field recordings, music, memory, and image schemas to imbue her art with meaning. Body tracking, electronics, spatial audio and live electronic performance are just a number of the tools she employs to this end.

Jessie Leov is a composer and musician whose music draws on eclectic influences, traversing classical and popular music including cross-disciplinary collaboration across the arts. Her work reflects a deep curiosity about the world around her, exploring the natural world as well as responding to other art forms such as poetry and visual art. She has worked with organisations such as the New Jersey Symphony, Bang on a Can, New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, NZTrio, Australian National Academy of Music and the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra.

Garling and Jessie’s creative partnership began in 2022, nine years after meeting in their first year of undergraduate studies. Born and raised in Aotearoa New Zealand, they both hold a Master of Music from the University of Auckland. Their work has been performed and exhibited across the world, and their collaborative work has been supported by Creative New Zealand and APRA AMCOS NZ.
