Traiettorie d’identità (ENG: Trajectories of Identities)

Imagine two objects in a space, still if afar from each other, interacting and moving if close enough. Imagine them with various relationships, each bringing different interactions and ways of moving.
The movements themselves are what system theory researchers call emergence: a property that is observable from the interactions between two or more components, fruit of and influenced by the contingencies generated inside the system. Traiettorie d’identità (ENG: Trajectories of Identities) is an umbrella title for the research Piaser is currently carrying, for this occasion in the form of a system for alto saxophone and Autonomous Algorithmic Digital Agent (a set of algorithms coded through a model formed by listening, analysis, decision making and playing). Music—as sonic and formal development—emerges from the interaction between the components, without the direct definition of any strictly required transformation (as in traditional scoring). Every sound gesture, sonic decision, or direction shapes and is shaped by the others’, bringing to a here and now, an iridescent identity always different yet recognisible through the repetitions that repeats.

Paolo Piaser

Paolo Piaser is an Italian composer, systemician, and independent researcher based in Den Haag. He
is currently carrying on a research on the application of system theory to his compositional and
performative practice, walking the spaces of emergence, listening, identity, and (co-)creativity in
contingent performances. Among its threads, Piaser creates systems of interacting components,
aiming at using the emerging sonic and formal properties as music materials for his compositions.
