The basis of this set is a sonification of infrasound during the devastating collapse of Kīlauea volcano in Hawai‘i in 2018. This was built in Max MSP from a time series of seismic velocity changes derived from Coda Wave Interferometry (CWI). The latitude and longitude of infrasound events are represented spatially, and depth of infrasonic events is represented by frequency. EQ is also affected by latitude (frequency) and longitude (gain).
Plantwave controls various parameters and ‘plays’ a volcanic audio sample from freesound.org by Dobroide. Thanks also to freesound.org users, Hendrik, EminYILDIRIM, daveincamas, RTB45, felix.blume.
A volcanic soundscape is also created with Koma’s Field Kit, which is then processed by IRCAM’s RAVE plugin to create watery bubbling.
In 2018, a new eruption of Kīlauea volcano changed the island of Hawai‘i forever. From May to August, large lava flows covered land southeast of the epicentre (heard in the spatialisation), destroying over 700 homes and and devastating residential areas. At the same time, the summit area of the park was dramatically changed by tens of thousands of earthquakes, towering ash plumes, and a massive collapse of Kīlauea caldera. This was the most destructive eruption in Hawaiʻi for at least 200 years. On 30 April, the summit of Puʻuʻōʻō collapsed, an event that USGS scientists have since determined marked the end of the 35-year eruption which first began in 1983.

Her material builds on her electroacoustics project Vortichez, featured on releases by Obs, Elastic Dreams, Bivouac Recording, RMN Classical, Espaces Sonores, presented in radio festivals Radiophrenia and Irradia, and selected for the Arts & Science Days (Bourges) and BEAST FEaST (University of Birmingham).
