"Magical Body" is a more-than-human smut audio roleplay in three acts, written and produced by the artists Amanda Rice and Jo Pester. 

A Property Manager becomes infected with an unknown virus that forces an awareness of stories and events outside of his usual timeline of progress. He begins to embody the building problems of the property that he has managed for the last decade, and the many intelligent actors within the building. The result is a new age of understanding and relation, a widening of empathy across difference and of the understanding of what intelligence counts. 

The work imagines how more-than-human agencies and the complexities of anthropomorphism might relate to flexible labour markets, in which a whole host of non-human actors are tangled up. The timeline of progress is linear and singular, but what happens if we look around instead of ahead? We might start noticing other temporal patterns where multiple organisms enlist each other in their own projects and world building.

Amanda Rice and Jo Pester

Amanda Rice is a visual artist based between Mayo and Belfast. She makes moving image works centred around ideas of geological extraction, technology and archive. Forthcoming presentations include solo shows at South Tipperary Arts Centre and Expo Chicago (2025). Her recent film travelled with aemi’s 2024 touring programme ‘Spirit Messages’ and the 2024 BFI Film Festival. She has exhibited at ‘Publics’, Helsinki (2024) Metroland Cultures Gallery, London (2023) SIRIUS Arts Centre, Cobh (solo 2023). She received the Next Generation Award from the Arts Council in 2019 and the UCL Edward Allington Memorial Prize in 2018.

Jo Pester (b. 1992, Bristol) is a Bristol based artist working with video, sound and installation. Embodied listening, misinterpretations and failed communications inhabit much of Jo’s current work. She has an upcoming duo show at South Tipperary Arts Centre, and has presented work internationally including at Exposed Arts Projects (London); The Unlikely Journal for Creative Arts (online); Raven Row Gallery (London): Ecofutures Festival (London); and the BF Artist Film Festival IX in London and Lancaster. In 2018 she completed an MA in Fine Art Media from the Slade School of Fine Art.
