Saint John and the two extremes of the solar year, the two sols5ces. The two astronomical moments have always been felt as crucial periods of life on Earth and as such have been remembered and celebrated with specific ceremonies and rituals.
The Catholic Church, to defeat these ancient beliefs deeply rooted in human cultures, intervened by transforming and Chris5anizing them, so that the winter sols5ce coincided with the birth of Jesus (the night between December 24 and 25) and the summer sols5ce with the
celebra5on of the birth of Saint John the Bap5st (a unique event in the Catholic liturgical calendar, which celebrates saints only on the day of their martyrdom and death).
The feast of Saint John the Bap5st, which falls on June 24, is celebrated throughout Italy on the night of June 23 by ligh5ng fires and collec5ng herbs.
The resul5ng sound work is the fruit of an ar5s5c residency shared between Colec5vo Refluxus and the community of Pianzuola (municipality of Mongiardino Ligure) in June 2022.
The element chosen for the sound crea5on was water with all its declina5ons to the ancestral sacred feminine.
We claim the feminine declina5on of the celebra5on by bap5zing it and provoca5vely naming it aTer Saint Joan.

COLLECTIVE REFLUXUS

The Refluxus Collective is an intercontinental and intergenerational group formed by 3 women that understands and practices art as acts of resistance. Our work is intrinsic to urgent issues in the everyday sphere and in the territories in which we operate. Everyday life is understood as the challenges in the most immediate relations of micropolitics as well as in macropolitical terms. Since 2019, we have been producing interdisciplinary works focused on environmental issues addressed by interculturality, a fundamental point when the Collective was founded. We are three women from different territories and generations, working to combine cultures and artistic practice, which, although interdisciplinary, proposes as a founding pillar procedures for listening to territories and sounds as an agency for social transformation.

Co-founded by 5 students of the master’s degree in sound art at the University of Barcelona, today they are part of the collective: Ebe Giovannini, Malu Hatoum and Anat Moss.
