i’d been listening to the outside
the neighbours in the passers-by
the communities that we temporarily live alongside as they use the path
sharing walls, steps, infrastructure, sound
a sudden reminder of the internal rooms and floor-plans
in this shared stairwell
with the perfect echo of the hall
how many times have we been heard singing
coming and going
embracing the reverberations of the close
now, much more domestic
perhaps someone has moved in
unseen
but the hoover seems industrial
and we’re sucked in to their chores
