Beth Robertson
I’m a sound/radio artist and field recorder based in London and Glasgow. Across sound, ecology and geography, my practise is an inter-disciplinary investigation into more-than-human testimonies. Through the use of field recordings, photography and composition I create sound maps and installations that explore local ecologies and playfully experiment with different mediums of listening. Within my work I seek to queer the relationship we have with our environment through sound and put collective listening into practise as a form of environmental activism.
My work has previously been displayed in the Barbican, Dilston Grove and Groundwork Gallery and explores the queer feminist nature of ecology through various sound installations by repurposing old technologies like hairdryer hoods, telephone receivers and stethoscopes as tools for active and careful listening. I publish a lot of my sound work through zines and cassette tapes and perform in local venues around London and Glasgow. I was selected for the UAL Arts for the Environment Residency Programme at NAHR and with support from Creative Scotland, the Bothy Project on Eigg. Since 2023 I also have a monthly radio show on Resonance FM called ‘Urban Dwellers’ that explores the entangled urban identities of London’s local wildlife.
