Riga, the capital of Latvia, is a port city. Both Latvians and Russians live in Riga, and therefore both languages can be heard on the streets.
The way choral music blends with street sounds is unique in Riga and creates something new. The way blind people interact with their environment is also unlike anywhere else. The old trams from the Soviet era make a loud, metallic sound but also evoke a sense of melancholy due to the crackling loudspeakers announcing the stops.
The various soundscapes that expand Riga and the sonic diversity play the leading role in this portrait.
Many sounds, poetry by the poet Johannes van der Sluis, and limited text with atmosphere and history. A film for the ears, partly aimed at the blind and the visually impaired.
The title ‘Gold and Green’ disappeared through the sound collage. ‘Gold and Green’ is a poetic sound portrait that showcases the sonic diversity of Riga.
