  • Scotland Before & After the Highland Clearances
  • Genre: Soundscape Composition
  • Duration: 30 min
  • Taking place in the 18th and 19th centuries, the Highland Clearances saw people from the Highlands and Islands of Scotland forced from their homes. The result of blight and famine, as well as upper-class disputes over land ownership, the clearances manifested in communities being forced to seek opportunities in cities on the mainland or even abroad. Sometimes the clearances were violent with houses being burned down and some people, left without anywhere to live or any way to eat, froze and starved to death.

Kenneth Murray’s script for this soundscape travels through time. We hear Scotland from the 1700s through to the present day from the point of view of different characters. The journey intends to connect contemporary and historical social challenges, specifically, what the writer calls “disposable places”, which existed for working class people during the clearances and still do today. Murray’s writing informs the listener of the origins of the present day Scottish diaspora, a result of necessary emigration as a result of the clearances.

The audio that interprets Murray’s script is by the award winning sound designer Ella Kay. Hear 18th century thatched roofs, blacksmiths, farm animals, cobbled streets, traditional folk songs and Gaelic psalms alongside present hubbub under Glasgow’s Hielanman's Umbrella. Listen to the sounds of walking sticks through older ears, and giggles through younger ones. The programme is produced by the Radiophonic Institute and part of the Radiophonic Travel Agency series that allows anyone from across the world to visit unusual and sometimes impossible locations.
Featuring:

Radiophonic Travel Agency

The Radiophonic Travel Agency uses sound to enable listeners to explore the whole recorded world from the comfort of their home. To travel the world, all you need is a set of speakers or a pair of headphones. Bells in a Sri Lankan temple, pigeons in Milan’s Piazza del Duomo, the Atlantic Ocean spraying over the rocks of a Cornish beach. Sound has the power to immerse, surround and transport us. Freed from guidebooks and narration and, with only your imagination as companion, listen to the world in joyous new ways.

Kenneth Murray is a writer and campaigner, originally from Easterhouse in Glasgow, who writes for film, TV and theatre. He has won awards for his work on the representation of those with experience of the care system and is particularly interested in telling stories which give a different perspective on well-trod social issues.

Ella Kay is a composer, sound artist and saxophonist based in Manchester. She is influenced by the intricacies of humanity and life, and her work aims to interpret these often complicated areas through the realms of experimental sound. She is the recipient of the 2022 Oram Award.

Kirsty Housley is a director, dramaturg and writer who specialises in formally bold new work and collaboration. She was an RSC digital fellow in 2022 and currently under commission to the Royal Opera House, National Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company.

Written by Kenneth Murray. Sound design by Ella Kay. Dramaturgy by Kirsty Housley. Produced by Louis Gillespie and Ilia Rogatchevski for the Radiophonic Institute.
