Weetootla is in the Gammon Ranges, Australia. This work acknowledges the ongoing connection of the Adnyamathanha people to their country, where Weetootla is located, and pays respect to Elders, past and present.
This is country of ancient time, people, culture, land, rich in flora and fauna. Here time collapses, the here and now, then and was, all mingling. Land worn down holds a great strata of stories. Always a sense of many stories, multiple ways of reading the place. In this ancient timeline our own living a speck.
As settlers, how do we find a way to relate to, form a relationship with, this place, and with the original people of this land, beyond our preconceptions, colonial, racial, gendered? How can we allow our selves to be disrupted, to open, to experience other ways of being, ways of listening, ways of reading. What does it mean to “be in place’?
This piece, one in an ongoing exploration of ‘being in place’, incorporates field recordings, Adnyamathanha language and text written in response.

berni m janssen, a maker of: poems, texts, books, performances, sonic and visual art, events, programs & projects. Many collaborative, multidisciplinary, community engaged, ‘live art’, long-term. She works solo and with musicians, performers, sound, visual and text artists. The work has been presented in books and magazines, on radio and web, at events, festivals, over many, many years. Most recently (p)each, created with Vicki Hallett, was presented as part of Radiophrenia 2025. She lives and works on the unceded land of the Djaara people.
