“É desses pequenos grãos que a polícia constrói seus monumentos de miséria” (It Is from These Small Grains That the Police Build Their Monuments of Misery) is a sound piece built from recorded textual accounts by Brazilian prisoners who published books about their experiences in the prison system. Short excerpts from these testimonies are interwoven with a sonic environment that resonates with themes of incarceration, violence, justice, and survival.
Rather than illustrating the narratives, the piece creates a dramatic sonic space that moves close to lived experience while opening room for new associations and reflections. The work draws on texts by Graciliano Ramos, Luiz Alberto Mendes, Humberto Rodrigues, and Pedro Paulo Negrini, bringing together different voices and historical moments of the Brazilian prison system into a shared listening experience.

Frederico Pessoa

Frederico Pessoa is a Brazilian musician who collects soundscapes and everyday occurrences
for reinterpretation in electroacoustic and radio pieces, audiovisual works, and multimedia performances. He has written texts at the intersection of literature and the sociology of listening, aiming to explore, through words, the possibilities for mobilization created by sound.
He holds a postgraduate degree in Philosophy, a Master’s, and a Ph.D. in Arts from the Federal
University of Minas Gerais, and is a member of ESCUTAS: a research and study group in sonorities, communication, textualities, and sociability at the same institution. Additionally, he is one of the coordinators of the Laboratory of Sound Experimentation in the Department of Social Communication at the Federal University of Minas Gerais, where he works as a sound engineer.
