Circumbinary Planet explores the disintegration of a dwarf planet trapped within the gravitational field of two massive stars. This astronomical scenario functions as a metaphor for binary modes of thought, whose opposing forces destabilize and fragment human coexistence. The piece is constructed from broadband noise materials shaped through resonant filtering, dynamic envelopes, and spectral modulation. Dense textures
evoke the planetary mass, while impulsive events—short bursts and collisions—interrupt and redirect its trajectory. These interactions generate continuous shifts in spectral density and spatial distribution, suggesting the tension between competing forces. The work was developed using Pure Data for sound synthesis and process design, and Reaper for editing, spatialization, and mixing. In addition, field recordings were incorporated as sonic representations of social relations, introducing traces of human presence that interact with and are transformed by the same forces of tension and fragmentation. As the piece unfolds, the sonic mass becomes increasingly unstable, dissolving into granular and diffuse textures. This process reflects not only physical disintegration but also the erosion produced by rigid dualities—forces that
polarize, collide, and ultimately lead to fragmentation. Within this framework, the work suggests that a possible alternative lies not in opposition, but in the dynamic equilibrium of multiple forces: a condition of balance that resists collapse. Rather than presenting a linear narrative, Circumbinary Planet creates an immersive field in which spectral evolution, temporal scaling, and spatial motion articulate the tension between conflict and coexistence, inviting reflection on the necessity of more equitable and plural forms of relation.

Edwin Betancourth

Artist and music professor at the Universidad del Valle (Cali, Colombia). His work focuses on sound creation and experimentation within a contemporary aesthetic, drawing on electroacoustic and generative music practices. He has participated in international conferences and festivals, presenting his work and engaging in collaborative creation with groups from countries such as the United States, Mexico, Colombia, Ecuador, Spain, and Germany, among others. He is currently pursuing a PhD in Art History at El Colegio de Morelos (Mexico), where his research examines Cali’s salsa as a noise-based aesthetic phenomenon.
