“Hogo,” which means protection in Japanese, is a Musique Concrete piece that features sounds from field recordings I captured in Japan. It’s made up of three equal parts. “Kaeru-Koe,” which means frogs—voices, uses small, random pieces of Japanese and other sounds from train and subway stations. In the second 10 minutes, “Gōsutokōsuto” or Ghost Coast, uses field recordings of ocean tides that reveal and hide a path of tunnels on the cliffs of Iwate prefecture. “Kaeru-Batta” layers sounds of frogs on the left channel and crickets and other insects on the right channel. As a visual artist who isn’t a musician, sound is materiality, and pulse comes from exploration. The latter allows me to listen, and the former frees me from my lack of musical knowledge.

Omar Reyna

Omar Reyna is a Mexican-Canadian artist who focuses on the intersection of research and the activity of making with an emphasis in lens base, sculpture and sonic art. Much of his artistic practice takes place in the boreal forest near the city of Whitehorse, where he lives and works.

Born in Mexico City and now residing in Yukon Territory, at the north of Wester Canada, Omar has studies visual communication, photography, sculpture, sound art, painting, and the philosophy of image. His work has been exhibited in various countries, including Canada, Argentina, South Korea, Mexico, the United Kingdom, and the USA. Notably, Omar was a finalist in 2023, and a long-listed in 2025 for the Yukon Prize for Visual Art.
